The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites is ideally located at the corner of Spring Garden Road and South Park Street overlooking the picturesque, Victorian-style Public Gardens and the historic fort, the Halifax Citadel.

Just around the corner is the vibrant shopping district of Spring Garden Road. Pubs, cafés and restaurants beckon, and the immediate district offers first-class entertainment, including fine jazz clubs, cinemas, theatres and a selection of internationally-flavoured dining establishments. The Halifax historic waterfront, universities and hospitals are all within easy walking distance.

Room cost $165.00 per room – they are holding a block of 25 rooms for the conference.   Breakfast is not included.  http://www.lordnelsonhotel.com/

Transportation Information

Buses, cabs and the free "Fred" bus.

If the conferees walk two blocks from the Lord Nelson west toward Robie Street, they can catch the #7 Robie bus (with a pre-purchased ticket $1.60; without tickets $2.00) almost directly to the Port Campus. There is a 3-5 min walk from the #7 stop at South and Barrington, to the Campus itself.

Here is the link for the Metro Bus system route maps and schedules for visitors to Halifax: http://www.halifax.ca/metrotransit/visitors.html

To walk from the Lord Nelson Hotel to the NSC AD Port Campus takes 20 minutes

Cabs are plentiful and should run about $6.00 each way, if shared, it makes it relatively inexpensive.

There is a free bus, the FRED, that runs from 10AM to 6 PM. It is a tourist bus that makes many other stops on the way, but it is a very cheap way to get around Halifax. Here is the link for FRED: http://www.downtownhalifax.ns.ca/default.asp?mn=1.8.36

Dalhousie UniversityArts Centre - 6101 University Ave.

Dalhousie University is a few blocks from the Lord Nelson Hotel. We are meeting in the Dalhousie Arts Centre, at 6101 University Ave and Henry Street. Dalhousie studleymap.pdf.  The Arts Centre is D400 on the campus map.

NSCAD Port Campus – 1107 Marginal Road

In 2007, the stunning Port Campus saw the university's expansion out to the Halifax waterfront. A dramatic symbol of NSCAD’s significant presence in the community, the 70,000 square foot NSCAD Port Campus features 18 foot ceilings, generous natural lighting, and will house many of the university’s more industrial program components, including sculpture studios, a wood shop, metal shop, foundry, product design and ceramics studios. It also will act as the primary academic centre for first year students beginning in September 2007. The uninterrupted view of the harbour from its second floor studios through 172 feet of glass curtain wall is without doubt the best in Halifax.

The Waegwoltic Club

This historic club is located is near Kings University. Probably the best way to get people there and back will be to group them in taxis. If the weather is warm and sunny some people may want to walk (1/2 hour door to door)

Registration information is at: CAFAD REGISTRATION FORM 2008.pdf

RESTAURANTS

Plenty of retaurants will be found along Spring Garden Road,  and in the waterfront area near the Port Campus of NSCAD

WHAT TO DO IN HALIFAX

Public Gardens
If relaxation is what you are looking for, head for the elegant Public Gardens just opposite The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites. This oasis is a rare example of a formal Victorian public garden, surviving intact and relatively unspoiled in the heart of a modern city.  Visit the website for more information.

Roam the Citadel
The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites is located just minutes away from the Halifax Citadel, Canada's most visited national historic site. Walk inside this magnificent 18th century fortress and step back in time as period soldiers march to the sound of pipes and drums and the cannon roars at the stroke of noon. The view alone from the Citadel is worth the walk up the hill.

Peggy's Cove
823 – 2561

Located on Prospect Road, a 30 minute drive from downtown Halifax, Peggy's Cove is famous for its featured lighthouse and is one of the most photographed places in Canada.  The lighthouse is Canada's only post office housed in a lighthouse, featuring its own stamp in the image of a lighthouse.  Stay well away from the water's edge as dangerous waves are known to crash ashore without warning.  Peggy's Cove features a restaurant, gift shops and accommodations.  For photos and tour information visit the website.

Pier 21 National Historic Site
1055 Marginal Road
425-7770
This exhibition hall was an interpretive center in Canada's last immigration shed.  This building first received immigrants starting in 1928 and closed its doors for good in 1971.  It is estimated that it will take up to 4 years to locate all the passengers through the city and enter them into the database.  Many people visit annually to research part of their roots.  The exhibition offers a virtual train ride and first hand accounts of their immigration experience. Click here for more information.

Wander the waterfront
The shops, restaurants and sights along the Halifax waterfront are a must-see. Just exit the hotel along Spring Garden Road and then head down the hill. You'll know you're there when you reach the harbour. The historic waterfront is the setting for major festivals throughout the summer and ample fun throughout the year.
