The Centre for the Arts and Communications (CFAC) at Grant MacEwan University seeks a dynamic theatre artist/educator with leadership capacity to become the Chair of Theatre Arts. Theatre Arts is a two -year conservatory-style musical theatre program that moulds ‘triple threat’ performers by offering equal parts theatrical, musical and dance training. This program has a rich thirty-year history and is recognized throughout Canada for the quality of its graduates, many of whom have successful careers on stages around the world. One of the many hallmarks of our demanding curriculum is the depth and breadth of the performance opportunities available to students. 

 

In this full-time continuing position, the program chair is responsible for the overall vision, management, planning and delivery of the program, as well as a variety of directing and teaching assignments. He/she also serves as the artistic director for the theatre arts performance season in the main stage and lab spaces. This is done in collaboration with the Theatre Production program which provides technical support.

 

MacEwan is Alberta’s newest university, offering over 70 different credentials to more than 40,000 students on four campuses.  CFAC offers a diverse range of programming for those interested in careers as performers, artists, writers, designers, arts managers and technicians. Qualifications

The candidate must have a vision and passion for excellence in musical theatre education, as well as a strong record of teaching, stage directing, research and creative achievement in the field.  A graduate degree in a relevant discipline is required, in combination with significant teaching and professional experience. Candidates will be expected to possess leadership skills, the ability to create an environment that fosters student learning, and an understanding of curriculum development processes.

 

Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills are necessary, as well as superior skills in administration. The successful applicant will be able to establish rapport and effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and external contacts to ensure the continued vitality and enhancement of the Theatre Arts program.

The Theatre Program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College invites applications for a 8.5 month teaching-term appointment for its Acting Stream. The successful candidate will possess an MFA (Theatre) degree, or equivalent combination of professional experience, education and training and demonstrate significant professional theatrical experience in acting/directing as well as having taught at the undergraduate level. Responsibilities include instruction and curriculum development in the areas of photography, visual communication design, and design foundations.   

 

Qualified candidates should have a Masters degree or its equivalent in photography, visual communication design or a related field, with significant industry experience in studio and location photography. Candidates also possess a minimum of three years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level with knowledge in curriculum design and course development. The Grant MacEwan University Design Studies program is located in Edmonton, Alberta and offers visual communication design education in five areas: print design and illustration; exhibit design and retail merchandising; interface design and interactivity; design and photography; and video production and motion graphic design.  

 

Through theoretical and conceptual grounding, practical craft knowledge and application of tools and technology, students gain solid skills enabling them to enter a wide variety of professional design disciplines. The successful candidate will establish an exemplary scholarly and creative presence, stimulate interdisciplinary creative research, mobilize established studio strengths within NSCAD and participate in local and international research networks.  The Canada Research Chair is expected to promote a strong externally funded research programme, to contribute to teaching at the University and to engage with the larger community. The Dean, Graduate Studies will provide leadership to the growing Graduate Studies program which currently offers a Master of Applied Arts and is introducing a Low Residency Master of Applied Arts program in 2010.

OBJECTIVES

The Dean of Graduate Studies, reports to the Vice President Academic & Provost and is responsible for the strategic development, growth and leadership of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University. The Dean provides strategic direction and vision for Graduate Studies and facilitates coordination in the planning and management of graduate curriculum development, recruitment and enrolment. As well, the Dean provides strategic and administrative leadership for the enhancement of innovative, rigorous and sustainable scholarly and practice-based research, professional development and other related activities in multidisciplinary arts, design and media within Emily Carr University. The Dean promotes and stimulates a culture of study, teaching and research collaboration within the Emily Carr community.

The Dean is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all Graduate Studies programs including developing and maintaining the infrastructure to support graduate students in their research pursuits as well as inspiring and supporting creative scholarship and graduate teaching and supervision throughout the University. The Dean manages operational and capital budgets, including all resource allocation and supervises support staff and faculty involved in Graduate Studies. The Dean provides leadership to the Low Residency Master of Applied Arts program through the Chair, Low Res. The Dean establishes collaborative working relationships among all areas of the University. In collaboration with the President and the Vice President Academic & Provost, this position provides strategic direction in the development of the goals, objectives and philosophy of graduate studies in the University. The Dean of Graduate Studies is a member of Senior Administrative Committee, the Deans’ Council and the Senior Research Committee.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.                                           Provides strategic leadership and administration to Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University, including the development of curriculum, and all policies related to programs, and the integration of Graduate Studies into the Emily Carr environment.

2.                                           Supports research and teaching assistantships for graduate students, ensuring an outstanding academic experience through effective collaboration with supervising faculty. In turn, ensures that the graduate assistants are meeting their responsibilities to the University and to their academic program. Works with the Coop office to ensure that the Graduate Studies Internship program is expanded to meet the needs of a growing population of graduate students.

3.                                           The Dean provides leadership to the Low Residency Master of Applied Arts program, directly supervising the Chair, Low Res (MAA) and ensuring alignment with the graduate program curriculum, standards and policies.

4.                                           Represents Emily Carr University on a variety of external committees and establishes relationships with institutional counterparts both provincially, nationally and internationally.

5.                                           Participates with other senior administrators in the administration and planning process at Emily Carr; participates in a variety of internal committees and working groups including the Deans’ Council, Senior Administrators’ Committee and the Senior Research Committee.

6.                                           Counsels students encountering academic challenges; provides academic advising, workshops, and other services to graduate students.

7.                                           Provides accurate and timely information to potential students, faculty and administrators concerning the graduate program and its procedures in close collaboration with the appropriate staff in Student Services.

8.                                           Provides administrative leadership to all Graduate Studies programs by preparing and monitoring operational and capital budgets, and hiring, training, supervising, deploying, evaluating, disciplining, dismissing and administering the collective agreements for faculty and staff supporting the Graduate Studies program.

9.                                           Evaluates graduate studies and graduate student research activities on an ongoing basis, with regard to purpose, fiscal sustainability and community impact and adjusts operational and strategic plans as needed.

10.                                       Performs other work related to the pursuit of academic excellence at Emily Carr.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

Advanced degree (MFA, MDesign or PhD) and strong background in educational leadership, preferably at the graduate level, and post-secondary interdisciplinary research in the arts, design and media fields. Successful record of professional practice, including exhibitions, publications, productions, presentations, etc.. Experience with establishing internal and external collaborations with industry, cultural and post-secondary partners.  Solid administrative experience in higher education at the graduate level with a professional knowledge of the art and design context.

Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide leadership and vision to the development and growth of a graduate studies culture. Strong intellectual leadership, excellent management and strategic planning skills with the ability to lead collaboratively and supervise the research, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programs of graduate studies. Ability  to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of diverse individuals within the Emily Carr community and within a broad external community. A commitment to the mission of Emily Carr and supporting the goals of graduate studies as it relates to the strategic plan.
