Award Announcement 2010:

 Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation‏

The Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce that Geneviève Leclair has been awarded $12,000 as the recipient of the Foundation’s 2010 advanced music study award. The 2010 award was offered in the area of orchestral conducting and was open to candidates under thirty years of age from across Canada.

The final selection round for the award took place on March 29th in the MacMillan Theatre at the University of Toronto.  Three finalists rehearsed the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra in selections from Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique before an independent jury of Canadian orchestral conductors.

The Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award is intended to provide significant career development opportunities to a young Canadian musician or music scholar, typically at the graduate level.  The recipient is chosen through a competitive process that is national in scope.  The award, $12,000 in recent years, is offered annually or biennially.

Reflecting Sir Ernest’s wide-ranging endeavours, the award is offered in different areas of music, areas that are not funded appreciably from other sources.  Awards have been offered in composition, conducting, instrumental and vocal performance, pedagogy, early music, chamber music, collaborative piano and music education. Twenty-five awards have been given since 1985,

M.A and M.F.A in Interdisciplinary Studies

In the M.A and M.F.A traditional skills and specializations are augmented and contextualized by a Fine Arts perspective and a cross-disciplinary approach. The graduate programs offer core theoretical seminars but their strength lies in the integrity and commitment of a diverse range of academics, artists and staff who have developed this stream. These involve participants from the Faculty of Fine Arts, as well as our partners at First Nations University of Canada, Campion College, Luther College and throughout the University of Regina. Individually designed programs encourage students to study with members of faculty from a variety of disciplines, interests and specializations. As a student you choose your professors and work together with them to design your courses and program of study.

New technologies, new markets and the changing nature of work require innovative approaches to education – innovations that respond to individual circumstances. As a Fine Arts student, you know that life is infused with art – that art now stretches across all boundaries, bridging a diverse range of practices, traditions and disciplines. Theatre and film, performance art and music composition, art history and film theory, media studies and anthropology, visual arts and linguistics, queer theory and English literature - these are just a few of the possible combinations that can be constructed through an M.A or M.F.A in Interdisciplinary Studies. Imagine what you could do…

Application deadline: Ongoing

DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA PRODUCTION AND STUDIES

M.A in Media Studies / M.F.A in Media Production

The Department of Media Production and Studies (MPS) at Regina is the only university program between Toronto and Vancouver offering an M.F.A in Media Production, and housing a state-of-the-art DJ and beat-making lab, making it the centre for film and media production in Canada’s majestic flatlands.  Our M.F.A and M.A degrees enable you to choose disciplinary focus in the practice and study of film, video, animation, new media, and interactive media and performance, while benefitting from strong crossdisciplinary contexts through the core critical theory and methods courses offered in our program in Fine Arts Interdisciplinary Studies.  Professors are prize-winning experts in a number of exciting areas, including independent feature-length and short narrative, alternative cinemas and DIY filmmaking, interactive media and performance, media and film theories, and several national cinemas (including African, Canadian, French, Russian, Eastern European, and World).  Our department houses a Canada Research Chair in Interactive Media and Performance, the IMPLabs, and the New Media Studio Laboratory, and is emerging as a centre of excellence for the practice, study and advancement of Indigenous hip hop arts in Western Canada and the North.

In Regina, Saskachewan’s capital—the ground zero of Tommy Douglas, Canada’s Greatest Canadian, and Canada’s Other Greatest Canadian, Corner Gas’s Brett Butt—the sky’s the limit for leading-edge study, and our students are making their marks nationally with support of their work from SSHRC, Telefilm, and the Canada Council.  City resources include the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, the Canada / Saskatchewan Soundstage, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, TRLabs, and over thirty independent production houses.
