Explore Design 08

Explore Design ’08 (ED) is a 2-day event held on October 1st and 2nd, 2008 at the Metro Toronto Convention Center in Toronto, where senior high school students and post-secondary students are provided with the information required to pursue an education and ultimately a career in the world of design. Featured design disciplines include furniture, interior and architecture, fashion, video, graphic, digital, multimedia and many more…

Interactive experiences for attendees include workshops offered in exhibitors’ booths, installation environments and the chance to test the latest technology. In addition, leading members of the design community will be presented in the speaker and seminar series.

ED 2007 was visited by over 4000 focused students.  Students attended primarily in groups organized by their schools from across Ontario and beyond.  In 2008, 5000 qualified students, parents and teachers are anticipated. To date, many respected universities, colleges and private schools have already signed up for ED 2008: Simon Fraser University, Fanshawe College, George Brown College, Sheridan College, Vancouver Film School, St Clair College, Lawrence Technological University, College for Creative Studies, New England School of Art & Design Suffolk University, and Herzing College Toronto are just a few.

A Message from Vera Frenkel re the Portrait Gallery Project

Dear friends and colleagues,

Much work is being done both in public and behind the scenes to try to rescue the Portrait Gallery project following Stephen Harper's appropriation of the designated Wellington Street premises in Ottawa
(the former U.S. Embassy) for his private receptions.

After cancelling all work on the Ottawa site in favour of what turned out to be a failed arrangement with Encana in Calgary, the Harper government issued a Request for Proposals from developers (rather than
architects or municipalities), setting nine cities in competition against each other to design some sort of hybrid housing for the Gallery.

An unrealistic February deadline was quietly extended to early April, and is almost upon us.

I would ask that the following message be read by anyone concerned that an appropriate home be found for the remarkable Portrait Gallery collections that are still in storage, and for future contributions by
artists in all media reflecting the face of Canada in every sense.

Several concerned initiatives have converged on the Facebook site "Friends of the Portrait Gallery of Canada", which is gathering signatures at:--
http://www.facebook.com/s.php?

...as is the important petition at:– http://www.PetitionOnline.com/pg123456/petition.html

Both lists invite comments as well as signatures, and  yours would be most welcome

With many thanks and best wishes,
Vera Frenkel
